Chapter 22

Clara

The family had taken three different cars from the airport after we touched down in Boston. Harrison drove ours. Lachlan sat in the passenger seat. I was in the back with Gigi and Waylon. Cash and Keely, along with their two kids, CeeCee and Ryan, were in their own car in front of us. Declan and Owen were not far behind.

We were following Cash down a rural road on the outskirts of town. I had never been to Boston before, but Eddie had told me Lachlan had gotten a job there, so I assumed Lachlan knew where we were.

We hadn’t even stopped for breakfast. I didn’t even have a change of clothes for me, though I had a few things packed for Waylon in his bag. He was a little fussy, maybe from the plane ride, or from his schedule being off. He’d only eaten a few of the cereal pieces I’d given him.

Lachlan turned his head when he started to cry. “What’s wrong, my lil’ man? You ready to be out of that seat?”

Waylon rubbed his eyes and whined a little. Lachlan held his hand out for the bag. I handed it to him, and he dug around, pulling out a spoon. He handed it to Waylon, and he started beating it against his seat, singing almost.

My heart fluttered so hard, I thought it might escape through my throat.

“It’s not too much further,” Lachlan said to me, like he hadn’t just made me fall in love with him even harder.

I nodded, not able to talk. I had lost my breath.

Gigi looked up from her pillow propped against the window and set her hand against her heart, pretending to pass out.

We both grinned.

I looked out of the window while Waylon was occupied and watched as a long strip of road passed us by. Lachlan had said we were all going to Cillian O'Callaghan’s house, though mostly everyone called him the Beast of Boston. Keely had mentioned he was Cash’s cousin from Ireland, but they weren’t close.

I just hoped I could get out of the car with Waylon for a while and stretch my legs. Process what had happened last night, on so many levels, while trying to give my son some normalcy while at a gangster’s house.

This life wasn’t new to me. Even if my father never directly tried to get us involved, indirectly he always had. And when I took the job with Dr. Sala, I spent most of my time trying to heal the wounds they inflicted on each other. But I was still on the outside. I’d never been involved to this degree.

I never thought my son would be with me either. I had no other choice, though. New York was too dangerous, and I had no clue where Erin was. She was getting brazen if she was breaking into my house while a war raged outside of it.

I’d give her the diamonds if I could find them and they would make her go away. When I’d said that out loud, Lachlan and Cash had looked at each other.
